=----------------------------------------------------(Foreword)--(Dan Wright)-=
There are cobwebs hanging from my ceiling and spiders crawling on my walls.
My legs ache and I am ready for bed. In "demo speak" I am an old
timer--been interested or involved in the scene since 1987. My biggest
accomplishment would have to be creating the first organized [internet]
demos site in September 1992. The site has moved and changed dramatically
but yet the first demos uploaded still remain online and on this CD.
What attracted me to demos back in the old days was their uniqueness--
exotic music, strange art, and the stories they told. Hell, I am still
impressed by many of the productions I see today. However, I think I am
more impressed by the dedication of these individuals to produce something
that amazing and give it away--demos are freeware. So please take a moment
and think about this when watching these demos. Hey, maybe you will even
consider writing these people a letter/e-mail on what you thought. It can
be a thankless job and sometimes a little praise/criticism goes a long way.
Turned Out,
Dan Wright - dmw@gate.net - 06 May 1996
=---------------------------------------------------(Introduction)--(Snowman)-=
Hello all, and welcome to the first Hornet Underground CD.
This introduction is intended primarily for those currently in the demo
scene. Modern <baygle> slang, obscure <chip-tune> references, and Tone
Balls will not be omitted for easy reading by the general audience. This is
a CD produced _by_ the demo scene. It seems only fitting to write
appropriately for its members.
Today the CD must be completed. The final touches are being added. Time
for another cup of coffee! What's that itch? Oh yeah, better go smoke.
Paperwork is being finished. Crufty files are being cleaned off the network
drives. This project is at a close... the sense of finality overwhelming.
After this text is finished, I'll burn off the final master, have it beta
tested, and go to sleep.
_____Zzzzz...
"Hey! Wake up dude!"
"Baaaa... what? Trixter!? What are you doing here?"
"It's a dream. I can be anywhere I want. Now get up silly! Man, you gotta
get out of here! Everyone on csipd and #trax thinks you're a big sellout
and they're coming here to burn you alive now! Run!!"
"What? But all I wanted to do was make a CD... people can't download all
the stuff in /alpha anymore - it's too big. I promised them free CD's! The
idea in making the CD was to give us more security to grow on ftp.cdrom.com.
What more could they want?"
"They wanted you to get permission for everything on the CD, _before_ you
put it on the CD. Walnut Creek CDROM got sued and went out of business.
You've lost your reputation. You've lost the newsletter and the archive.
Years of work down the drain. Guess you should've thought ahead a little
more, huh?"
Oh man... look what I've done.
_____Zzzzz...
"Walnut Creek CDROM technical support. Christopher speaking, how may I
help you?"
"Yeah, I can't get any of these demos to work with my Super Blaster 16! Why
do all you lame demo scene people use the GUS?"
[ring ring]
"Can you hold on for a moment? Walnut Creek CDROM technical support.
Christopher speaking, how may I help you?"
"Hello, I can't get Holistic to run on my system. What's wrong?"
"How much memory do you have?"
"16 megs."
"Well, that should be enough. How much base memory do you have free?"
"Base memory? Where do I click to find that out?"
[ring ring]
"I'm sorry sir. Can you hold on a moment? Walnut Creek CDROM technical
support. How may I help you?"
"Hello, this is Spot from Timeclock. Can we have our own /group directory
on ftp.cdrom.com?"

Oh man... look what I've done.
_____Zzzzz...
Hello all, and welcome to DemoNews issue 148.
Work continues on deleting all demos on our site that were rated *** and
below. After these are removed, the /alpha tree should shrink to about 7
gigs. With the /incoming/demos directory getting about 600 megs of uploads
per week, we no longer have room to hold all productions online. The /music
directory will be moved completely to ftp.luth.se in order to make more room
available on ftp.cdrom.com.
Since the release of the Hornet Underground CD, demo uploads have grown by
approximately 40% each week. In two months, it will be completely
impossible to rate them all given current resources. New rating schemes are
being devised that might help, but things look hopeless.
Due to constant disk head thrashing, we lost the mount housing all music
from /1993 to /1995. I made a partial backup a few months ago, but almost
everything from August to December of 1995 is gone.
Oh man... look what I've done.

==[CD Information]=============================================================
=-----------------------------------------------------(Disclaimer and Safety)-=
This CD is not in competition with party CDs (i.e. the Assembly or Party CDs
produced by ROMWARE). Those CD's not only contain the entries from the
competitions, but also feature pictures and movies taken from the party
itself. This CD is intended primarily as an alternate means of obtaining
files from our site, not as a party CD substitute. From personal experience
I have been very impressed with ROMWARE's productions and suggest you all
try to get them.
If your production appears on Hornet Underground, you are entitled to a free
CD. Please write to r3cgm@cdrom.com for more information on this. If your
production appears on this CD and you aren't satisfied by being given a free
CD, we will happily remove it from this collection for the next release.
Asking to have your production removed from the CD does not mean that it has
to be removed from the demos archive. On the contrary, we can keep your
demo on our site and remove it _only_ when it's time to make a CD.
=-------------------------------------------------------------(The Interface)-=
The interface to this CD isn't very pretty. It is functional. As time goes
on and this CD is updated, we will develop a more snazzy way of browsing the
files. Time has run out.
